Kelly Goto speculates on the Gphone (or is that gPhone?)
Unlike Apple, Google is not expected to release an actual phone, but instead has developed an open-source software solution.
A Google OS for mobiles, that unifies the whole banana in a scalable way – for little phones, big phones, smart phones and dumb phones. Integration of search, LBS, web browsing and other fancy services with the phones functions has been shown to be the bomb – Google maps on iPhone is gold, and custom youTube is a great experience.
Or as the Telegraph put it, in a glass-is-half-empty kind of way:
But now it seems the alleged ‘iPhone killer’ could be one of the most hyped non-devices in history.
Hardware or no, a Google OS, like the iPhone implementation of OSX, offers integration as a means of simplifying the experience of data services. And hopefully, lowering the cost:
Ideally, the GPhone would utilize integrated search and advertising to subsidize the partial cost of mobile web browing. At least mobile web viewing (especially in Europe where 3G costs are so high) could be partially or fully subsidized due to advertising and search revenue.
Then if Google does buy into the mobile spectrum (in the States) it could be quite a handful.
