Australia is a land of 3G iPhone extremes

Telstra’s network advantage seems to be showing in the results of this Wired survey on iPhone 3G speeds.

  • U.S. carrier AT&T tied for third with Telstra, Telia and Softbank, where users reported average download speeds of roughly 990 Kbps.
  • Australian carriers Optus and Virgin users reported the slowest speeds of about 390 Kbps on average.

If you get right into the map on this post, you’ll start to see the graphical evidence of people’s network experiences around Melbourne: Optus is almost all red and Telstra is almost all yellows and greens.

Wired are surmising that it is largely network problems that are responsible for reported slow iPhone connectivity speeds. Although CNET are hounding Apple who have apparently punched out an improvement.
