Wikipedia: the new Geocities?

The Wikipedia entry for street artist Rone is as nice a profile as one could write for oneself. The artist is quoted three times, and there’s a quote from author Jake Smallman that posits Rone as Melbourne’s most prolific street artist since Ha-Ha’s output has diminished.

I found it by clicking on the artist profile link from the website for the exhibition of custom turntable slipmats A Nice Set. The other artists had links to their homepages, so I assume they were invited to submit URLs or the curators sought them out.

Regardless, Wikipedia is a great homepage hoster: it’s free, Google loves it, it’s got that Encyclopedic authority, and it’s super-easy to update and maintain.

Note: I’m not trying to suggest Rone wrote a promo piece for himself in Wikipedia; the history page suggests that isn’t the case. I just think it’s potentially a good use of Wikipedia.
